Story | The Farmer And The Dog

Long ago, crabs and herons were always enemies. However, sometimes when we are sad or grieving, we don't make the best decisions. That's exactly what happened to a heron who fell for a wicked trick played by a crab.

Once, a heron was standing by a lake, looking very sad. From a distance, a crab had been observing him for a long time. Curious, the crab approached the heron and asked, "Dear Uncle, why do you look so sad and full of grief today?"

The heron cried out, "Oh dear, dear, what can I say? We have been happily living on the nearby tree for many years. All our previous generations grew up there. But unfortunately, there won't be any more herons on that tree."

The crab asked, "Why is that, Uncle?"

"It's because a snake has taken up residence in the tree-hole, and every time our chicks hatch, he eats them. I have no way to get rid of that evil snake," explained the heron.

"I have a solution for you, Uncle," suggested the crab. "There is a mongoose that lives in a hole on a nearby tree. All you need to do is create a trail of fresh fish from the mongoose's hole to the snake's tree-hole. The mongoose will follow the trail, eating the fish. When it reaches the snake's hole, they will surely fight. The mongoose will kill the snake, and you will be free from all your troubles."

The heron was very grateful for the crab's advice and immediately set out to carry out the plan. The plan worked, and the snake was killed by the mongoose. However, after killing the snake, the mongoose ended up eating the heron's chicks too.

The moral of the story is: Think carefully before you take action.
