Paragraph | The Shaheed Day/ International Mother Language Day
The 21st February is a red-letter day in our national life. On this day in 1952 the brave sons of our country sacrificed their lives for our mother tongue Bangla. The Bangali is the only nation who sacrificed lives for mother tongue. To recognize the sacrifice of our heroic sons the UNESCO has declared the 21st February as International Mother Language Day in 1999. Now the day is observed all over the world. On the 21st February we get up very early in the morning. Then we go to the Shaheed Minar bare footed. We wear black badges. We sing the most touching song "Amar Bhaier Rakta Rangano..." We offer flowers to the language martyrs. We arrange seminars and cultural functions on this day. The national flag is kept half mast on the top of each institution. Newspapers bring out special supplements. BTV and Bangladesh Betar telecast special programmes. Really the 21st February is both shocking and glorious to us.
