Dengue is a sickness caused by four types of viruses. These viruses are named DENV-1, DENV-2, DENV-3, and DENV-4. The way they spread is when certain mosquitoes, called Aedes aegypti, bite people after getting infected, and these mosquitoes usually bite during the daytime. These mosquitoes really like places with water that doesn't move, like puddles, water containers, and old tires. If places are dirty and garbage isn't cleaned up well, that can also help the mosquitoes spread.

Sometimes, when people get infected with Dengue, they don't feel sick or show any signs. But when symptoms do show up, it usually happens around 4 to 7 days after the mosquito bite. The sickness feels a bit like having the flu. People might suddenly get a high fever that goes up and down, feel pain in their eyes, muscles, joints, and bones, have a really bad headache, and get a red rash on their skin.

For treating Dengue, doctors can help manage the symptoms, like making the person feel better even though there's no special medicine to cure the virus. Once a person gets better from being infected by one of the Dengue viruses, they can't get sick from that exact same virus again. But this protection only works for that one virus type, not the other three.
