Paragraph on Acid Pollution

Acid rain is when rain or other forms of precipitation become very acidic, which means it has a low pH and contains high levels of hydrogen ions. Acid rain can include rain, snow, hail, fog, or dew that is polluted with acid, especially sulfuric and nitric acid. Air pollution is mainly caused by releasing gases like sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide from different sources. This pollution can harm plants, aquatic animals, and buildings. Air pollution happens when sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, and nitrogen oxide react with water molecules in the air, forming acids. Governments have been working to reduce the release of pollutants into the air since the 1970s, and their efforts have shown positive results. Nitrogen oxides can also be naturally produced by lightning, and sulfur dioxide is released during volcanic eruptions. The chemicals in air pollution can cause paint to peel, corrosion of steel structures such as bridges, and the wearing away of stone statues.
