In 1971, Bangladesh became independent after a violent war with Pakistan. At that time, Bangladesh was called East Pakistan and was a part of Pakistan. Pakistan had gained independence from British rule in 1947, and Bangladesh achieved independence on December 16, 1971. This date is now known as "Victory Day" in Bangladesh and is celebrated every year on December 16th. It is a national holiday.
