Metro Rail is a high-speed rail system that carries passengers around the city. Metro Rail was introduced to allow busy people in the city to move quickly from one place to another to avoid traffic jams. Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, is one of the largest and most densely populated cities in the world. This is why Bangladesh government has started the construction of metro in Dhaka city. This is Dhaka Metro Rail, officially known as Mass Rapid Transit (MRT). When completed, it will be capable of carrying 60,000 passengers per hour and 50,000 per day. Currently, part of it has been completed and trains have started transporting passengers from the Uttara area to Agargaon. Dhaka Metro Rail will make life easier for people in the capital and play an important role in Bangladesh's economy.

Currently, the government of Bangladesh is building a metro line to ease traffic congestion in Dhaka city. Under this project called Mass Rapid Transit (MRT), 6 metro trains are under construction in Dhaka, which can carry 60,000 passengers per hour and 50,000 passengers per day. Metro Rail runs on electricity so it is very environmentally friendly. It can run at a maximum speed of 100 km/h, which saves time very effectively. The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is sponsoring the Dhaka Railway Metro Project and Dhaka Mass Transport Company Limited (DMTCL) is implementing it. The project is expected to be completed in 2025. Currently, part of the construction work has been completed and trains have been put into operation to transport passengers on the Uttara-Agargaon section. When the Dhaka Metro Railway project is completed, it will make the lives of the people of the capital easier, help professionals, patients and students not waste time and suffer from traffic jams, and close important role in the economy of Bangladesh. Economists expect the Dhaka Metrorail project when completed will save Tk 20,000 per year.

Metro Rail is one of the most popular modes of public transport in large, densely populated cities around the world. The first rapid transit system was launched in London in 1863, now part of the "London Underground". In Dhaka City, construction of a metro line is currently underway to reduce traffic congestion. The project is called Mass Rapid Transit or MRT-6. The project was approved under expedited procedure by the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council or ECNEC on December 18, 2012 and inaugurated on June 26, 2016. The Dhaka Urban Railway Project under construction has 5 lines and 6 lines. The total length of this railway line will be 128,741 km with 61,172 km of underground tracks and 67,569 km of elevated tracks. The number of metro stations will be 104 including 53 underground stations and 51 air stations. The project is implemented by the state-owned Dhaka Public Transport Company Limited (DMTCL). Currently (January 2023), Metro Rail carries people on the Uttara to Agargaon section of the railway. Once the Dhaka Metro line is fully operational, traffic congestion will ease and people living outside the main city will be able to get to work easily. Dhaka Metro Rail will save Tk 20,000 per year, equivalent to 17% of Bangladesh's tax revenue or 1.5% of GDP. It will create a safe and sustainable transport infrastructure in and around Dhaka, while ensuring passengers travel safely. Metro-6 has an estimated cost of Tk. 33,472 cores and is completed by December 2023.
