The Story of King Lear And His Three Daughters
A long time ago, there was a very powerful old king in England named King Lear. He was exhausted from his responsibilities as a ruler and wanted some rest. He decided he should step down from being king and share his kingdom among his three daughters: Goneril, Regan, and Cordelia. But before he did that, he wanted to know how much his daughters loved him.
First, he asked his oldest daughter, Goneril, "How much do you love me?" Goneril replied, "Sir, I love you more than words can express." King Lear was happy with her answer. Then he asked the same question to his second daughter, Regan. She said, "My love for you will never change, no matter what." Lear was very pleased to hear this.
Finally, it was Cordelia's turn. She was the youngest and dearest to him. But Cordelia didn't want to pretend or flatter. She told her father that she loved him as much as a daughter should love her father.
King Lear got really angry when he heard Cordelia's honest answer. He was so upset that he banished her from the country and gave her share of the kingdom to his other two daughters. Cordelia ended up in a forest. One day, a prince from France saw her while he was hunting. He was impressed by her beauty and married her.
As time passed, King Lear realized that Goneril and Regan were not treating him well. They didn't care for him like they used to. This made him very sad and sick. One day, his two daughters even forced him to leave the kingdom. But Cordelia heard about this and came with an army from France to rescue her father.
When Cordelia saved him, King Lear finally understood the true love of his youngest daughter. He realized that her honest and genuine love was more valuable than all the flattering words his other daughters had said.
