Trees are a precious gift from nature that have been intertwined with human civilization since its inception. These majestic beings play a crucial role in maintaining the delicate balance of our ecosystem, a balance essential for the sustenance of life on our planet. Their significance extends to both our daily lives and economic activities.

Trees serve us in a multitude of ways, beginning with the oxygen they provide. This life-sustaining gas is vital for our existence. Moreover, trees offer an abundance of nourishing foods and fruits, addressing our nutritional needs and helping to combat vitamin deficiencies. They contribute to our fuel and timber resources, which are integral in constructing homes and crafting furniture. During scorching summers, they offer cooling shade, a refuge from the sun's intensity. Remarkably, trees even have a hand in summoning rain from the skies above our forests.

Global warming, a pressing concern, stems from deforestation. This phenomenon not only elevates global temperatures but also triggers more frequent natural calamities. A case in point is Bangladesh, where lightning strikes have claimed lives. In response, the Bangladeshi government is embarking on a mission to plant one million palm trees, an effort aimed at absorbing lightning damage and safeguarding lives.

In a lower riparian country like Bangladesh, we possess the opportunity to utilize elevated areas for tree planting. The months of June and July are optimal for such endeavors. We can strategically plant trees alongside roads, ponds, highways, dams, canals, rivers, and educational institutions. Abundant roads and highways in the country provide ideal sites for tree-lined avenues. Additionally, unused patches of land, both low-lying and hilly, offer potential for tree cultivation. However, it's important to note that Bangladesh's forest coverage is limited, constituting only a fraction of the land area, a situation that warrants attention.

Choosing appropriate tree species for planting is paramount and should align with the land's characteristics and climate conditions. Coconut trees thrive in coastal regions, while plantains flourish near ponds. To make informed selections, soil testing by experts is essential, ensuring the right trees are matched with suitable locations. Acquiring plant specimens from government nurseries in consultation with experts guarantees a thoughtful approach.

Merely planting trees doesn't suffice; ongoing care is crucial. The new trees need vigilant attention to thrive and evade harm from animals or environmental factors. Our relationship with trees is symbiotic; they are our steadfast companions. Hence, indiscriminate tree cutting should be replaced by conscientious tree planting. Not only should we increase our tree population, but we should also nurture and preserve them, contributing to a healthier, happier, and more prosperous life. We must take decisive steps to ensure the success of this mission.
