A Tale of a Poor Boatman and a Scholar
Once upon a time, in a little village, there lived a very poor boatman. This man could not read or write, and his daily struggle involved rowing his boat from morning till evening just to make ends meet. One day, a scholar happened to board his boat. The scholar asked the boatman, "Have you ever read history?" The boatman replied, "No, I haven't." The scholar then told him that a quarter of his life was wasted without knowledge of history. They continued their journey, and the scholar, admiring the beautiful scenery, asked the boatman if he had ever studied geography. Once again, the boatman said, "No." The scholar lamented that half of the boatman's life was wasted.
They both fell silent for a while, and as the afternoon approached, the scholar asked the boatman, "Do you know anything about science?" The boatman admitted, "No, I know nothing about science." The scholar declared that three-quarters of the boatman's life had been wasted. This time, the boatman remained silent. Suddenly, dark clouds filled the sky, and a powerful storm known as a 'Nor'wester' began to rage. The scholar was terrified, and the boatman asked him, "Sir, do you know how to swim?" The scholar sadly replied, "No, I don't know how to swim." The boatman then said, "Our boat is sinking. Now I see that your bookish knowledge is of no use in this moment of crisis."
Bayazid's Love for His Mother
Once, there was a young boy named Bayazid. His mother was unwell, and one night, he was studying by her bedside. Suddenly, his mother woke up, raised her head, and asked her son for a glass of water. Without hesitation, Bayazid went to get water from the pitcher, but it was empty. He remembered there was a fountain at the far end of the village. Despite the darkness of the night, he went there alone and returned with the water. By the time he reached home, it was the middle of the night.
When Bayazid returned, he found his mother fast asleep. Not wanting to disturb her, he stood quietly by her bedside with the glass of water. At dawn, his mother woke up and was deeply moved by her son's devotion. She prayed earnestly to Allah to bless Bayazid with the highest spiritual honor. Allah granted her prayer, and Bayazid went on to become one of the greatest men in the world.
