যে শব্দ কোন Noun, Pronoun বা Noun এর সমতুল্য কোন শব্দের পূর্বে বসে বাক্যের অন্য শব্দের সাথে সম্পর্ক প্রকাশ করে তাকে Preposition বলে। - Ashik Khan Notun
A preposition is a compound word. 'Pre' means পূর্বে, 'Position' অর্থ হচ্ছে অবস্থান। সুতরাং, Preposition- এর অর্থ হচ্ছে পূর্বে অবস্থান।
Kinds of Prepositions
Preposition -কে ছয় ভাগে ভাগ করা হয়েছে। যথাঃ
1. Simple Preposition: At, by, with, of, off, from, for, through, etc.
2. Double Preposition: Into (in+to), within (with+in), etc.
3. Compound Preposition: Across (on+cross), behind (by+hind), etc.
4. Phrase Preposition: By dint of, in front of, on account of, etc.
5. Disguised Preposition: He went a hunting (on).
6. Participle Preposition: I saw the people walking past him. According, regarding etc.

Aboard (জাহাজের উপরে বা মধ্যে বুঝাতে বসে): We went aboard the ship.
Amid/amidst (কাব্যিক অর্থে, মধ্যে/ ভিতরে/ মাঝখানে): He finished his speech amid tremendous applause.
Amongst (পরিবেষ্টিত বা মাঝখানে): It is difficult to see him clearly among/amongst the crowd.
Around (সবদিকে/ চারদিকে): I ran around the building. As (যেভাবে/ সেভাবে/ হিসাবে): I treat him as a child.
Astride (দুই পা দুই পাশে ঝুলিয়ে রাখা বুঝালে বসে): The boy is sitting astride his father's shoulders.
Bar/barring (ছাড়া/ ব্যতীত/ যদি না): We leave by tomorrow barring accident.
Beneath (নিচে, নিম্নে বা ভিতরে): The police behavior in this issue is beneath contempt.
Beyond (নাগালের বাইরে): It is beyond my imagination. But (কিন্তু বিপরীত অর্থ বোঝাতে): He is rich but unhappy.
By (পাশে অর্থে): He stood by the window.
(নির্ধারিত সময়ের মধ্যে): I will return the book by Monday next.
(মাধ্যমে): Send it by post.
(অনুসারে): It is 8 o'clock by my watch.
(প্রতিজ্ঞা অর্থে): We swear by God that we will tell the truth.
(হিসেবে) : Hire a car by the hour.
Concerning (সম্পর্কে) : He asked several questions concerning the future of the company.
Considering (বিবেচনা করে দেখার পর): He did very well considering his age.
Despite (সত্ত্বেও): He was good at physics despite the fact that he found it boring.
During (যাবৎ/ ব্যাপী/ কোন সময় বা স্থিতিকাল ধরে): I stayed in Canada during the winter.
Except/ excepting (বাদে) : All the members of the team went to England except Tamim.
Excluding (Opposite of including): Lunch costs Tk. 100 per person, excluding drinks.
Including (সহ) : Lunch costs Tk. 100 per person, including drinks.
Inside (ভিতরে): I did not go inside the house.
Like (মত): He talks like a fool.
Minus (বিয়োগ চিহ্ন): Four minus three is one.
Near (নিকটে) : The cat is lying near me.
Notwithstanding (সত্ত্বেও): Notwithstanding some major financial problems, the school has had a successful year.
Opposite (বিপরীত): My house is opposite of the college.
Outside (বাইরে): He is waiting outside the house.
Past (গত, পরে, পেরিয়ে বা ছাড়িয়ে): We are going to past our house.
Pending (মুলতবি/অমীমাংসিত): He was released on bail pending further injuries.
Per (প্রত্যেকের জন্য, প্রতিটিতে, প্রতিশতকে, প্রতি ঘন্টায়, প্রতি লিটারে) ঃ It runs 30 miles per hour.
Plus (যোগ চিহ্ন): Three plus five is eight.
Regarding (সম্পর্কে): I know nothing regarding this matter.
Round (চারদিকে): The earth moves round the sun.
Save (preposition) They knew nothing about her save her name.
Than (চেয়ে) : He is older than me.
Throughout (আদ্যোপান্ত): We celebrate Pahela Baishakh throughout the country.
Till (পর্যন্ত): Wait here till I return.
Toward (সামনে/ দিকে): His attitude toward the government policy.
Underneath (নিচে): The tunnel goes right underneath the city.
Unlike (মত নয় বা অন্যরকম বা ভিন্ন): She is unlike her mother.
Untill (যতক্ষণ পর্যন্ত না)। Wait here until I return.
Up (উপরের দিকে): I went straight up to the counter.
Upon: Congratulate এর পরে Upon বসানো যায়।
More uses of prepositions
Beside (পাশে): I sat beside him.
Besides (এছাড়াও): Besides working as a teacher he also writes novels in his free time.
Between (দুইয়ের মাঝে between বসে): Divide the pens between Rahim and Karim.
Among (দুইয়ের অধিক বুঝালে Among বসে): Divide the pens among the boys.
With (সাথে): I went to market with my friend.
(দিয়ে): I killed the bird with a gun.
Of ('র' এর, জাত বা সম্পর্ক বুঝাতে of বসে)
ঢাকা বাংলাদেশের রাজধানী Dhaka is the capital of Bangladesh.
সম্বন্ধ অর্থে- I know nothing of it.
অধিকার অর্থে- It is a sonnet of Shakespeare.
Off (বিচ্ছিন্ন অর্থে Off বসে): Switch off the fan.
দূরে অর্থে Off বসে: Be off from me.
বিরোধী অর্থে Off বসে: My brother is off smoking.
পূর্বে বা আগে বুঝাতে Before বসে। I will paint the house before winter.
About (বিষয়ে বা সম্পর্কে বুঝাতে about বসে): I told you everything about him.
(চতুদিকে বুঝাতে about বসে): I walked about the house.
(প্রায় অর্থে about বসে): It is about 10 o'clock.
In (কোন স্থানে পৌছানো অর্থে in বসে): I arrived in Dhaka at 4 p.m.
জড়িত বা সম্পৃক্ত অর্থে in বসে- I am involved in politics.
কোন স্থানে বাস করা অর্থে live এর পরে in বসে- I live in Bangladesh.
কোন কিছু ভিতরে বোঝাতে: He is in the class room now.
পেশা অর্থে: I am in civil service. অবস্থা বোঝাতে: He is in good health.
মাসের, ঋতুর, সালের, দেশের, বিষয়ের, ভাষার, বড় শহরের নামের পূর্বে এবং সময় বুঝাতে in বসে।
I will come back home in May. I will go to Canada in summer vacation.
I passed the S.S.C. examination in 1991.
Tea grows well in China.
He reads in English.
We speak in English.
I get up early in the morning.
কোন ব্যক্তি বা বস্তুর পরিস্থিতি বা অবস্থা নির্দেশ করতে in বসে। যেমনঃ
He is in problem. Our village is in danger now.
মধ্যে বা ভিতরে বুঝাতে in বসেঃ They are many fishes in the river.
Into (বাহির থেকে ভেতরে বুঝালে into বসে): The teacher entered into the class room.
(গতি বুঝালে into বসে): The frog jumped into a cave.
On (উপরে): লেগে থাকা অবস্থায় উপরে বুঝাতে on বসে। There is a pen on the table.
Through (কোন কিছুর মধ্য দিয়ে): I went there through forest.
(সাহায্যে অর্থে): I got the prize through hard labour.
At, in (ছোট স্থান হলে at এবং বড় স্থান হলে- in বসে): I live at Khilkhet in Dhaka.
By (দ্বারা বা মাধ্যম): I go to school by bus.
Since (কোন নির্দিষ্ট সময় বুঝায়) : I have been reading a book since morning.
For (জন্য) : I am waiting for you.
(কোন অনির্দিষ্ট সময় বুঝায়): I have been reading a book for two hours.
(পক্ষে) : I will vote for you.
(অভিমুখে): I left for Dhaka.
(সত্ত্বেও অর্থে) : For all his wealth, he is not happy.
Against (বিরুদ্ধে): Iran is fighting against America.
From (হইতে): I am from London.
Over (উপর দিয়ে অতিক্রম বুঝাতে Over বসে): A bird is flying over our head.
(স্পর্শহীন অবস্থায় উপরে বুঝাতে over বসে): There is a fan over the roof.
Above (অনেক উপরে বা অধিকতর উপরে বুঝাতে above বসে) : The sky is above our heads.
(অপেক্ষা অর্থ বুঝাতে above বসে): I value character above every thing.
Under (নিচে, কোন কিছুর নিচে বুঝালে under বসে): There is a cat under the table
(কারো অধীনে বুঝালে under বসে): We all work under the chairman.
Down (নিচে, উপর থেকে নিচের দিকে বুঝালে down বসে): You will fall down from the tree.
(নিচের অংশ অর্থ বুঝাতে down বসে): They live down the river.
Below (নিচে, নির্দিষ্ট পরিমাণ বা সংখ্যার কম বুঝালে below বসে): He has got below 60% marks in the S.S.C examination.
(নিম্ন মানের অর্থ বুঝাতে below বসে): This post is nothing but below his dignity.
Without (ছাড়া বা ব্যতীত বুঝাতে without বসে): We cannot live without water.
(ছাড়া/ ব্যতীত অর্থ বুঝাতে without বসে): You should not do anything without my permission.
Within (কোন সময়ের মধ্যে বা নির্দিষ্ট সময়ের মধ্যে বুঝাতে within বসে): I will write the book within two months.
(স্থানের মধ্যে বুঝাতে within বসে): His house is within two miles of the market.
Along (বরাবর অর্থ বুঝাতে along বসে): We are walking along the road.
After (পরে অর্থ বুঝাতে after বসে): I will go after you.
(পিছনে অর্থ বুঝাতে after বসে): We ran after the thief.
Behind (পিছনে কারও বা কোন কিছুর পেছনে বুঝাতে behind বসে): Who is standing behind you.
(সমর্থন বুঝাতে behind বসে): We are all behind you.
To (দিকে বা প্রতি দিকে বুঝাতে to বসে): I am going to Dhaka.
(কাছে বা নিকটে বুঝাতে to বসে) He will come to me.
Note: Home, here, there, abroad এর পূর্বে to বসে না।
Across অপর পাশে, আড়াআড়িভাবে বা এক পাশ থেকে অন্য পাশে বুঝাতে Across বসে: My college is just across the road. Go across the street.
Via (মাধ্যম): I go to Gopalganj via Faridpur.
Note: Relative Pronoun, Interrogative Pronoun বা Interrogative Adverb যুক্ত Preposition sentence এর শেষে বসে। যেমনঃ What is Dhaka famous for? Where do you live in?
Preposition আরো ব্যবহার
1. বড় স্থান বা বড় সময়ের পূর্বে In এবং ছোট স্থান বা ছোট সময়ের পূর্বে at বসে। In+ বড়স্থান বা বড় সময় at + ছোট স্থান বা ছোট সময়। সময়ের পূর্বে In ব্যবহার করলে তারপর The বসে, কিন্তু at ব্যবহার করলে কোন the বসে না। গ্রাম বা ছোট শহরের নামের পূর্বে at এবং বড় শহরের নামের পূর্বে বা দেশ বা মহাদেশের নামের পূর্বে In বসে। কিন্তু গ্রামে বা শহরে বা জেলায় বললে in a village/ in a town. in a city/in a district হয়। Note: ছোট জায়গার পূর্বে at বসে। নির্দিষ্ট সময়ের পূর্বে at বসে। অফিস, লাইব্রেরী, সিনেমা, থিয়েটার ইত্যাদির ক্ষেত্রে যখন তার স্বাভাবিক উদ্দেশ্যের কথা বলা হয়, তখন তার পূর্বে at বসে।
যে সকল শব্দের আগে Preposition "at" বসতে পারে: at noon, at night, at dusk, at dawn, at home, at school, at present, at a distance, at war, at peace, at play, at work, at dinner, at hand, at liberty, at last, at first, at first sight, at all,at instant, at dead of night, at an early age, at the door, at the window, at the same time, at the office, at meeting, at short notice, at 10 a.m. at 4 p.m. at half past five, at breakfast, at the moment, at the time, at the theater (= watching a play) at page, (at the office on duty)
যে সকল শব্দের আগে Preposition "in" বসতে পারে:
in foot পায়ে হেঁটে, in duty কর্তব্যরত, in time, in the morning, in the afternoon, in the evening, in the next few days, in the summer holidays, in the spring, in the July, in Delhi, in Bangladesh, in London, in a country, in a forest, in a desert, in the office, in the theatre, in the library, in arms, in danger, in ruins, in power, in haste, in cash, in time, in absence, in a hurry, in the dark, in the sun, in the shade, in the army (Occupation) in a few days, in a bad temper, weak in history.
Note: বড় জায়গার পূর্বে in বসে। যেমনঃ বড় শহরের নামের পূর্বে দেশ বা মহাদেশের নামের পূর্বে। অনির্দিষ্ট ব্যাপক সময়ের ক্ষেত্রে in বসে।
By, with:
(1) কাজ যার দ্বারা ঘটে তার নামের আগে by এবং যে যন্ত্র বা উপকরণ (Instrument) দ্বারা কাজটি করা হয় তার নামের আগে with বসে।
(2) Doer (অর্থাৎ ব্যক্তি বা প্রাণীর দ্বারা) বোঝালে by এবং Instrument (অর্থাৎ বস্তুর দ্বারা) বোঝালে with হয়।
(3) কোন উপায় বোঝাতে by ব্যবহৃত হয়: Travel by land (স্থল পথে যাওয়া), Travel by air (আকাশ পথে যাওয়া), Travel by plan (বিমানে যাওয়া), Travel by water (জল পথে যাওয়া), Learn by heart (মুখস্থ করে নাও), Travel by sea (সমুদ্র পথে যাওয়া), Travel by bus (বাসে যাওয়া), Travel by train (ট্রেনে যাওয়া), Travel by boat (নৌকায় যাওয়া), by force, by post, by Position, Disprove by fire, Caused by flood, by accident, by tuition, by hand, paid by credit card, by day, by night, by name, by land, by water, by river, by air, by boat, by bus, by train, by ship, (But on foot).
যেখানে Preposition বসে
Noun বা noun- এর সমতুল্য কোন শব্দের আগে Preposition বসে।
Examples:
1.She sat beside Hasan. (noun এর আগে preposition বসে)
2. I talked to him. (pronoun এর আগে preposition বসে)
3. We are in the classroom. (noun phrase এর আগে preposition বসে)
4. He is fond of traveling, (gerund এর আগে preposition বসে)
5. Listen to what Hasan says. (noun clause এর আগে preposition বসে)
