Story | A Good Name Is Better Than Bags Of Gold

Once there was a very rich merchant. When he passed away, he left behind two sons. These sons were very different from each other, so they had to go their separate ways after dividing their father's wealth. The older brother was very stingy. He would even punish the servants who gave money to the poor. He would trick his customers to make more money, and because of this, he had a terrible reputation. Everyone hated him. 

On the other hand, the younger brother was a kind-hearted person. He was honest in his business dealings and was always ready to help those in need. People knew about his good deeds and admired him for his generosity. However, because he was so generous, he was always short of money. But he didn't mind it because he believed in the importance of helping others.

As luck would have it, both brothers fell in love with a beautiful lady from their city. They both wanted to marry her. The older brother sent her expensive gifts and asked her to marry him. The younger brother, on the other hand, sent her a simple gift. The lady asked the person who acted as a messenger for the older brother about his qualities. The messenger replied that the older brother had lots of gold and was very rich. Then the lady asked the messenger of the younger brother about his qualities. The messenger replied that the younger brother had no wealth, but he was honest, kind, and generous. 

The lady remained silent for a while and then said to the older brother's messenger, "Your master may have gold, but he has a bad reputation. To me, having a good reputation is more important than having bags of gold. I prefer to marry a kind man with a good name rather than a stingy, dishonest, and bad person. I choose to marry the younger brother."
