Composition | Jute/ The Golden Fiber Of Bangladesh
Jute is an important crop in Bangladesh because it used to bring in a lot of money from other countries. It's called the golden fiber because it has a shiny, golden color. To understand jute, we need to know what it is, where it grows, how it's grown, how we get the fiber from it, and what it's used for.
Jute is a type of fiber that comes from the bark of a jute plant. The jute plants are usually 8 to 12 feet tall and don't have any branches. Leaves grow on the stem of the plant. The stem is covered with a thick bark that has the fiber in it.
Jute grows best in low, wet areas like Bangladesh, which has a lot of moist land. During the rainy season, these areas can get flooded. Jute grows well in several districts in Bangladesh, such as Dhaka, Comilla, Noakhali, Faridpur, Mymensingh, and Pabna. These places are known for jute cultivation. Jute also grows in Thailand, China, and India, which is our neighboring country.
First, the farmers prepare the soil and plant the seeds in April. After a few days, small plants start to grow. When the plants are two or three inches tall, the farmers remove the grass and weeds. They add manure or fertilizer to help the plants grow better.
Next, after two or three months, the farmers add more manure to the fields. Then they cut down the plants, tie them into bundles, and soak them in water for a few days. Bacteria in the water help separate the fiber from the bark. After that, they take the fiber out of the water, wash it, and dry it in the sun. This is how jute is made ready to be sold in the market.
Even though jute production is a bit difficult, it is beneficial for us. Jute is used to make different things like clothes, ropes, bags, mats, brushes, carpets, and paper. The stalks of the jute plant are used to make hardboard and fences. The green leaves of the jute plant can be eaten as vegetables.
In conclusion, jute is a promising cash crop for our country, and it benefits both nature and us. The government has recently banned the use of plastic bags, so jute can be used as an alternative to polybags. Therefore, it's important to grow more jute for the sake of nature and our country.
