Staff correspondent: A fair number of students fail in English every year in public examinations though they study it as a compulsory subject from class 1 A survey conducted by the British Council found out different facts responsible for this condition. Firstly, students are not motivated to learn this foreign language, rather they are given short cut technique to pass the examination. Secondly, the textbooks are unsuitable and teaching method is difficult. Besides, students are not encouraged to use English in the practical life. Most of interviewees said they are afraid of using English while communicating with others. Above all, they added that their vocabulary. Knowledge is very poor. While talking to this correspondent a leading intellectual of the country said. To overcome this problem we should put emphasis on learning English rather than passing the exam barrier. He also emphasized listening to ad watching English programmers of radio and television regularly.
