Cyclone Sidr Paragraph
The word "Sidr" comes from the language of Sri Lanka. It means "eye." They called it 'Sidr' because when they looked down from way up in the sky, the storm looked like a big eye. But actually, 'Sidr' is the name of a really strong and dangerous storm. It went over Bangladesh and wrecked many places in the southern part. This happened on a scary night in November 2007.
The storm started in the middle part of the Bay of Bengal, and it got really strong fast, with winds blowing at 215 kilometers per hour. Scientists said it was a Category-4 storm. It went to the southern part of Bangladesh on November 15 and caused a lot of damage. The areas near the coast got hit really hard, and it started raining a lot because of the storm. In some places, the water from the ocean came rushing in like a big wave, and it was more than 5 meters high.
Afterwards, people said that maybe around 10,000 folks had died because of the storm. The storm was so strong that it even damaged a famous place called Sundarbans, where there are lots of special trees and animals. They said it might take about 40 years for the trees to get better.
Things got really tough because there was no electricity and water everywhere in the country. The farms were messed up too, and lots of rice got lost. This was really bad because the rice was supposed to be ready in December. Places like Dhaka also got some light rain and strong winds.
The whole cost of the damage was around 450 million Dollars. Also, many schools got broken, like about 8,000 of them. The government helped out right away, and they did their best to fix things and help the people who were hurt. They made plans to help keep people safe in case more storms came.
Young people can help out a lot during times like this. They can rescue people, tell others about what to do, and help out groups that want to help. If everyone works together, Bangladesh can get through this tough time and keep getting better.
