Education in Private Universities Composition
Education in Private Universities
The creation of private universities has opened up opportunities for higher education in our country. We have two types of universities in Bangladesh: public universities and private universities. In the past, only state-run universities like Dhaka University, Rajshahi University, Chittagong University, and Jahangir Nagar University offered higher education.
Over time, the number of students increased in our country. As a result, only a few students could get the chance to receive higher education in state-run universities, leaving many students deprived. In response to this, at the end of the 20th century, many private universities started emerging to provide higher education to a large number of students. These universities have been making good profits in the education process, which has motivated others to establish private universities as well. Now, private universities are growing rapidly in our country, especially in the posh areas of Dhaka city. This gives an opportunity for students who couldn't get into state-run universities to pursue higher education in private ones.
However, education in private universities is quite expensive. These universities were established for commercial purposes and cater mainly to wealthy students. They have grown all over the country but have not created equal opportunities for students from low-income backgrounds.
There are also concerns about the education standards in these universities. Except for a few, the quality of education in most private universities is quite poor. Since their main goal is profit, they often lack qualified teachers, making it difficult for less fortunate students to get admitted. The focus for many rich students is mainly on obtaining certificates from these private universities.
Private universities sometimes fail to maintain a standard level of education and are seen as certificate-selling shops. This situation has worried intellectuals who believe that education should not be treated as a commodity. There is a lack of proper supervision for these private universities, and some of them even have branches at the district level. There have been allegations that students from some private universities use unfair means to pass exams.
Considering these issues, it's time to reflect on the matter. The government should take control over the education system in private universities and ensure the quality of education.
