The Status of Women in Bangladesh Composition
The Status of Women in Bangladesh
The status of women in Bangladesh has improved over the years, but it's not as high as in developed countries. Nowadays, women can participate in all aspects of society. They can be part of the parliament and engage in politics directly. They work in both government and non-government jobs. They go shopping and do various activities without losing their social and family standing. This shows that women have been given the freedom to be active in society.
However, achieving this progress required hard work and teachings from prophets, great men, scholars, and other leaders over many centuries. But not everyone in society is influenced by these teachings. Some less educated people are still superstitious and resistant to change. They live in remote villages where education is scarce, and they prefer to keep women confined to their homes, limiting their social and intellectual opportunities.
In these areas, the dowry system still exists, leading to the physical and mental abuse of women and sometimes even resulting in their death. Why should a man be paid money just to marry a woman? Though a woman is entitled to her share of her parents' properties, it often has little to do with dowry. What happens to those women whose fathers have nothing to offer during marriage? Unfortunately, those seeking dowries rarely consider such questions, leading to inhumane treatment of women.
As human beings, women should have equal status to men, and there's no debate about it. However, it shouldn't be exaggerated. Some women's movements demand men's status for women, which seems absurd and provocative. Men and women have different roles in society and family, but they complement each other, and their relationships are essential. It's not possible to separate them or replace one with the other. When launching movements or enacting laws, we should remember this universal truth.
