May Day Paragraph

May Day

May Day is a worldwide holiday for people who work. The 1st of May is International Workers Day. It remembers the important fight of working people all around the world. All countries in the world recognize it. Because workers who were killed in 1886, today's workers have good things. Today they get at least a certain amount of money for their work. They are safe at work, there are rules for their safety, and they only work eight hours a day. On May 3, 1886, the police shot into a group of strikers at the McComick Harvest Machine Company in Chicago. They killed at least one striker, and five or six others were very hurt. Many workers were hurt too, but we don't know exactly how many. Since the Industrial Revolution started, people in factories had to work very long hours, sometimes fourteen hours or even more in a day. In the 1880s, a new idea asked for an eight-hour workday. This idea was liked by both Labor Unions and workers who were not part of a group. May Day is a sign for workers all over the world. On this day, they promise to keep fighting against being treated badly and for rights for all people. It's the day that makes workers want to be together and get what they need. Overall, May Day is when workers from all over the world are connected. This day tells workers to not let people treat them badly, and to get better pay and better lives.
