The War of Liberation in 1971

The fight for freedom of our country in 1971 is called the War of Liberation. The war was against Pakistan's government. This war happened because the government of Pakistan took away the rights of the people in the eastern region. Our great leader Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman led the war. In the first part of the war, the Pakistan Army attacked unarmed people in Dhaka with weapons. This happened on the night of March 25, 1971.

When Bangladesh declared independence, many people like students, teachers, and government workers joined the war. Bangladesh formed different groups to fight for the country.

Then came the second part of the war. There were many groups of freedom fighters. Although the Pakistan Army had better weapons, Bangladeshi people and freedom fighters had only a few. But they managed to defeat the Pakistani Army in many battles. The war went on for nine months.

In the last part of the war, the Pakistani Army knew they were going to lose. They started killing children, women, and innocent people. Some bad Bangladeshis helped the Pakistani Army. Almost three million people died in the war. When the Pakistani Army saw that they couldn't win, they surrendered with ninety thousand soldiers. Bangladesh won the Independence war on December 16 when the Pakistan Army surrendered. Because of this victory, Bangladesh became an independent country in the world, and its people became free.
