Celebrating International Mother Language Day / Shaheed Day / 21st February

Almost a year ago, I took part in the International Mother Language Day celebration at my school. It was on the 21st of February in 2020. This day is very special in the history of Bangladesh. It's also known as Shaheed Day. It remembers the important 'Language Movement' that was connected to our fight for freedom. Back in 1952, on this day, some brave people from our country gave up their lives to protect our mother language, Bangla. Before that, the rulers from Pakistan decided that 'Urdu' would be the main language in East Pakistan. But Bengali people didn't agree with this. On February 21, 1952, students from Dhaka University marched in a group, and the police shot at them. Many students like Rafiq, Jabbar, Salam, and Barkat were killed. Since then, the 21st of February is remembered as 'Shaheed Day', a day to honor those who sacrificed their lives. It's a holiday, and my school did a lot of special things. They decorated the buildings, and our national flag was raised halfway. On this day, we go to a place called Shaheed Minar without wearing shoes and offer flowers. We wear black badges and sing a song called "Amar Bhayer Raktay Rangano Akusey February." We also had a big meeting and fun performances in our school hall. Many students and different people took part with a lot of excitement. I learned many important things, like how other groups also have events on this day. In 1999, a group called UNESCO said that this day should be celebrated all around the world as 'International Mother Language Day'. Bangladesh Betar and different TV channels show special programs. It's a really big achievement for our country.
