How To Write a Letter | Example of a Formal Letter
Let's talk about the two main types of letters:
Personal Letters: These are letters we write to people we know well. There are many reasons for personal letters:
Saying Thank You: We write to say "thank you" when someone does something nice for us.
Apologizing: If we make a mistake, we can write to say we're sorry.
Inviting Someone: We use letters to invite people to parties, events, or gatherings.
Making Plans: When we want to make plans with someone, we can write a letter to discuss the details.
Asking for Something: If we need help or want something from someone, we write a letter to ask for it.
Responding to Letters: When we get a letter from someone, we can write back to reply.
Different Parts of a Personal Letter:
Heading: This is where we put the date and sometimes the recipient's address.
Greeting: It's like saying "hello" at the beginning of the letter.
Body: The main part of the letter where we write what we want to say.
Closing: This is how we finish the letter, like saying "goodbye."
Signature: We sign our name at the end to show who wrote the letter.
Formal Letters:
These are more official letters that we use in business or serious situations. Formal letters have several parts:
Date: This goes at the top of the letter and helps keep track of when it was written.
Address: This is the formal address of the person or organization receiving the letter.
Salutation: It's like a formal greeting, such as "Dear Mr. Smith."
Introduction: The start of the letter where we introduce the topic.
Body: The main part where we explain everything in detail.
Closing: This is where we finish the letter politely.
Signature: We sign our name at the end, just like in personal letters.
Let's look at an example of a formal letter:
