The birth centenary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman
The 100th birthday of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the person who helped create Bangladesh, was celebrated throughout the country on March 17, 2020.
Bangladesh celebrated the birth centenary of its founder, President Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
The day marked the start of a yearlong celebration called 'Mujib Barsho' in Bangladesh and worldwide. President M Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina led the nation in observing Mujib Borsho, the year-long celebration of the birth centenary. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who is also the president of Awami League, placed wreaths at Bangabandhu's portrait at the Bangabandhu Memorial Museum in Dhaka in the morning.
Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was born on March 17, 1920, in Tungipara of Gopalganj, which was then a sub-district of Faridpur. He led the movement against the oppressive Pakistani rulers in East Pakistan, leading to its liberation in 1971. He became the first President of independent Bangladesh.
Different TV channels aired live programs in remembrance of Bangabandhu on this day. Newspapers published special supplements. Some events were held by socio-cultural organizations and educational institutions, but on a limited scale due to Covid-19. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also paid tribute to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on his birth anniversary via a tweet and a video link.
Bangabandhu's birth centenary was celebrated worldwide, with the initiative of UNESCO. The day is a public holiday and is also observed as National Children's Day because Bangabandhu loved spending time with children on his birthday. It is a memorable day that reminds us of the father of the nation and his contribution to freeing Bangladesh from the oppression of East Pakistan.
