Corruption in Pakistan
Simply put, corruption is when individuals, groups, organizations, or governments misuse their power to gain money, influence, and personal benefits through illegal ways. This goes against the law, social norms, and ethical principles, and harms people's rights while benefiting those involved in corrupt practices.
Pakistan has been around for a long time, but it still struggles with education. While other South Asian countries have achieved high literacy rates, Pakistan lags behind with 42% of its population being illiterate. This is due to a small group of extremely wealthy people having a lot of power while many others live in poverty.
If this situation continues, corruption will get worse over time. Past attempts to fight corruption have failed. Even the founder of Pakistan, Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, recognized the problem from the start, saying that bribery and corruption were a curse for the country that needed to be stopped firmly.
Unfortunately, this warning was ignored over the years. Instead of reducing corruption, it has actually grown. Today, corruption has become a huge problem that affects all aspects of life in Pakistan. A well-respected legal expert and constitutionalist, Senator S.M. Zafar, once described Pakistan as a 'tsunami' of corruption that has spread throughout society.
A seminar was held to discuss ways to improve anti-corruption efforts in Pakistan. Prominent individuals attended, including former Chief Justice Dr. Javaid Iqbal. He mentioned that people often complain about corruption but don't take real steps to eliminate it. Others also spoke about the widespread corruption, but no one delved into the causes behind it or suggested effective solutions. Only vague suggestions were made, lacking practical significance.
In conclusion, it's important to prevent the concentration of wealth and power in the hands of a few. This will help guard against corruption and its damaging effects.
