Subject -Verb Agreement
Rule-1: একই sentence এ যখন 1st, 2nd, এবং 3rd person Subject হিসেবে ব্যবহৃত হয় সেক্ষেত্রে প্রথমে 2nd তারপর যথাক্রমে 3rd ও 1st person হবে। যেমন। You, he and I are benefited. (স্বাভাবিক) I, you and he are guilty. (দোষ স্বীকার)
Rule- 2: Subject এর headword অনুসারে verb বসে। অর্থাৎ headword singular হলে verb singular এবং headword plural হলে verb plural হয়। যেমনঃ The quality of the apples (be) good.
Ans: The quality of the apples are good.
Rule-3: Not only.........but also, or এবং nor দ্বারা যুক্ত দুই বা ততোধিক noun/ pronoun noun/ এর ক্ষেত্রে noun/pronoun টি অনুসারে verb বসে। যেমন: You or he (be) present today.
Ans: You or he is present today.
Rule-4: Collective noun এর পরে সাধারণত singular verb বসে। কিন্তু বিচ্ছিন্নতা বোঝালে collective noun এর পরে plural verb বসে। যেমনঃ The committee (be) unanimous.
Ans: The committee is unanimous.
Rule-5: Adjective-এর পূর্বে the বসেল তা plural noun বোঝায়। তখন পরের verb-টি ও plural হয়। যেমনঃThe rich (be) not always happy.
Ans: The rich are not always happy.
Rule-6: All- এর পরে plural verb বসে। তবে, প্রবাদ বাক্যের ক্ষেত্রে all- এর পরে singular verb বসে। যেমনঃ They all (be) my friends.
Ans: They all are my friends.
Rule-7: Uncountable noun- (যা গণনা করা যায় না) এবং abstract noun (যা দ্বারা ব্যক্তি বা বস্তুর গুণ, দোষ, অবস্থা ইত্যাদি বোঝায়) সবসময় singular হয় এবং এদের পরে singular verb বসে। যেমন: Football (be) my favourite game.w
Rule-8: দুটি Singular noun যদি একই বস্তু বা ব্যক্তিকে বোঝায় তাহলে verb singular হবে। যেমন : The Headmaster and chairman (be) coming.
Ans: The Headmaster and chairman is coming.
Rule-9: দুটি Singular noun যদি একই বস্তু বা ব্যক্তিকে না বুঝিয়ে আলাদা আলাদা বস্তু বা ব্যক্তিকে বোঝায় তাহলে verb plural হবে। যেমনঃ The Headmaster and the chairman (be) coming.
Ans: The Headmaster and the chairman are coming.
Rule-10: দুই বা ততোধিক Singular subject যদি or, nor, either..........or, neither......... nor দ্বারা যুক্ত হয় তবে verb-টি singular হয়। যেমনঃ He or his friend (be) present.
Ans: He or his friend is present.
Rule-11: যদি Singular এবং plural subject or, nor, either.........or, neither...... nor plural দ্বারা যুক্ত হয় তখন subject- টি শেষে বসে এবং verb-টি plural হয়। যেমনঃ He or his brothers (do) this work.
Ans: He or his brothers have done this work.
Rule-12: A lot of, majority of, a number of, many এর পরে plural noun থাকলে plural verb হয়। যেমন: A number of students (be) present in the school.
Ans: A number of students are present in the school.
Rule-13: Singular subject, plural noun 'of' দিয়ে যুক্ত হলেও verb singular হয়। যেমনঃ One of the girls (be) smart.
Ans: One of the girls is smart.
Rule-14: One-third, one-fourth বস্তুর ক্ষেত্রে singular verb বসবে কিন্তু ব্যক্তির ক্ষেত্রে plural verb হবে one-third/ one-fourth এর ক্ষেত্রে ভগ্নাংশ plural হবে না, অন্য সকল ক্ষেত্রে ভগ্নাংশ plural হবে। যেমন:One-third of the work(finish).
Ans: One-third of the work is finished.
Rule-15: Noun clause এ কোন phrase/ gerund/ infinitive যদি subject হিসেবে বসে তবে verb singular বসে। যেমন: To err (be) human.
Ans: To err is human.
Rule-16: With, along with, as well as, together with, and not, in addition to, accompanied by ইত্যাদি word-গুলো কোন বাক্যের মধ্যে বসলে তার পূর্বে noun/ pronoun number person অনুযায়ী verb বসে। যেমন: Hasan as well as his father (come) here.
Ans: Hasan as well as his father has come here.
Rule-17: It is time, it is high time, word/phrase ago, last night, last month, long since, yesterday having, to be, once, wish, fancy, as if, as though এর পরে verb past form হয়। যেমন: I wish I (fly) in the sky.
Ans: I wish I would fly in the sky.
Rule-18: Universal truth বুঝালে verb সর্বদা present tense এর form হয়। যেমনঃThe earth moves round the sun. The sun rises in the east.
Rule-19: compound/complex sentence-এ একটা clause past tense থাকলে অন্যটি ও past tense হয় তবে universal truth এর ক্ষেত্রে present tense হয়। যেমনঃ When she finished the working, he (go) to bed.
Ans: When she finished the working, he went to bed.
Rule-20: 'Prefer, preferable, senior, junior' প্রভৃতি Word এর পরে 'than' না বসে 'to' বসে। এ ছাড়া ঐ Sentence-এ 'more' থাকলে উঠে যায়। যেমনঃ I prefer milk (than) tea.
Ans: I prefer milk to tea.
