Composition | A Day In The Life Of A Housewife
My mother is a housewife. This is what she does in a typical day. She wakes up at 5:00 in the morning. While the rest of the family is still sleeping, she starts cooking our breakfast. At around 5:30, she wakes up the kids who go to school. As each of us comes out of the bathroom, she gives us our school uniforms, all clean and ironed. She even combs and dresses the younger ones. The school buses start arriving at 6:00 a.m., and by 7:00 a.m., everyone has left for school. By that time, our father and older siblings who go to work have also woken up and washed themselves. They all join our mother for breakfast.
After breakfast, she prepares the pot for boiling the day's laundry on the stove. While the clothes are getting ready to be washed, she sweeps the floor, makes our beds, and wakes up our younger siblings who don't go to school or go in the afternoon. By 8:30 a.m., all the working family members have left for their jobs. My mother, after washing, dressing, and feeding the younger children, starts washing the clothes. After carefully washing and rinsing them, she hangs them on the line at the back of the house.
While she's washing clothes or doing other household chores, she always keeps an eye on the children. They might hurt themselves inside the house or wander outside. She doesn't let the street vendors selling fish, meat, and vegetables go unnoticed. Even the garbage collectors from the Town Board are not forgotten. If she didn't supervise them, they might leave the trash bin untouched or not empty it completely.
It's already 10:30 a.m. She prepares some snacks for the children and herself. Once they are served, she starts cooking the afternoon meal for the family. It needs to be ready by 1:00 p.m. when the office workers come back for a quick lunch before returning to work at 2:15 p.m. The last one of us doesn't come home from school until well past 2:30. So our mother doesn't have time to rest until 3:00 p.m.
After a short break or nap, she's up and about again by 4:00 p.m. The morning laundry has already been collected, and now she irons it. Meanwhile, she directs us to bathe and dress for the evening and do our homework.
Once the laundry is done, she, with the help of my sisters, cooks dinner for the family while sending us boys out to play some games. When we return, dinner is ready. We eat at 7:00 p.m.
Now it's time for her to visit her housewife friends in the neighborhood or receive them if they come over first. Alternatively, she might have to accompany our father when he visits our friends and relatives in other parts of town. If none of that happens, she watches some of her favorite TV shows until 8:00 p.m. While we do our homework, she sews our uniforms if they're torn and fixes our buttons if they come off. By 10:00 p.m., she needs to go to bed, or else she might not be able to wake up on time the next morning.
Her life may seem difficult and repetitive to others, but she enjoys every moment of it. She spends her time taking care of us, her loved ones.
