Composition | Polybag/ Bad Effect Of Using Polythene Bags
The use and production of polybags cause significant harm to our environment. These plastic bags endanger life on Earth and pose a potential threat to our cultivable land. Therefore, there is a widespread demand to halt the use and production of polybags.
Polybags, also known as polyethylene, are made from toxic substances such as propylene and petroleum hydrocarbon. They cannot naturally decompose. Polybags are readily available and inexpensive, making them convenient to use. They allow anyone to carry necessary items easily. Every day, a large number of polybags are used throughout the country, with most of them being discarded after a single use, ending up in drains or open spaces.
Polybags create various health problems, including skin diseases and cancer. Furthermore, they obstruct our drainage systems and impede the regular flow of water. Consequently, stagnant water accumulates in low-lying areas of cities. Polybags are durable and impermeable, reducing land fertility. When polybags are burned, they emit toxic fumes, contributing to serious air pollution. Moreover, the indiscriminate use and production of polybags negatively impact industries such as jute, textiles, and small-scale businesses.
In Bangladesh, the Ministry of Environment banned the use of polybags in Dhaka city starting from January 1, 2002. Subsequently, on March 1 of the same year, the government extended the ban to the entire country. These measures were undoubtedly commendable. However, it is unfortunate that polybags are still available in markets. Experts believe that this situation has arisen because the ban was implemented without offering suitable alternatives.
People from all walks of life have become accustomed to using polybags, making it challenging to find a suitable alternative. Nonetheless, if we are willing to make a small sacrifice for the sake of the environment, jute and cloth bags could serve as perfect alternatives. Polybags offer no advantages other than temporary convenience in carrying and preserving items. Therefore, it is crucial to raise awareness among citizens about the negative consequences of using polybags.
