The Flood in Bangladesh
Bangladesh is a low land with many rivers, and it's also in the monsoon area. So, during the monsoon period, there are heavy rains, and floods are very common in our country. Almost every year, floods come to our country.
In the past, people thought floods happened because of God's anger towards sinners. But now we know floods are caused by heavy rains when rivers cannot hold all the water, so they overflow their banks. Sometimes, floods are caused by rushing water from the mountains or sudden melting of snow or tidal bores.
Floods cause great damage to our lives and properties. Houses are destroyed, cattle are washed away, crops are damaged, and trees are uprooted. Many people drown, and thousands become homeless and without food for days. Communication with the outside world is cut off, and people have to use boats to move around.
The flood of 2019 was the worst, with record-high water levels and a long duration. The whole country went underwater, and normal activities stopped for a long time. Many people became homeless and suffered greatly. Crops and cattle were destroyed, and the country took a long time to recover.
After the floods, even worse problems arise. Famine breaks out in the affected areas, and many people die because of lack of food. The prices of necessary things go up, and dangerous diseases spread, causing great suffering. The economy of the country is ruined.
Floods have a few positive effects. They bring fertile silt to the land, making it good for growing crops. Floods also carry away waste materials.
During and after floods, relief work is crucial. The government and voluntary organizations help the affected people by opening relief camps and providing food, clothes, and other necessary things. The affected people need to be supported for a long time, and they may need loans to rebuild their lives.
To prevent floods, proper steps should be taken. Rivers should be re-excavated, and a good drainage system should be introduced. Many sluices and outlets should be made to let rainwater pass easily.
