International Mother Language Day Composition

All countries have important days they remember. Bangladesh, our own country, is no different. One special day for us is February 21st, called Mother Language Day. It's a day when we remember brave people who gave their lives for our language. This day is also called Shaheed Day.

The United Nations, which helps countries work together, made February 21st International Mother Language Day. They did this because they saw how important our language, Bangla, is to us. This happened on November 17, 1999. Let me tell you a bit about why this day is so important.

In the past, when Bangladesh was part of Pakistan, the rulers decided only Urdu would be the main language. This made many people unhappy. On March 21, 1948, a Pakistani leader named Mohammad Ali Jinnah said this. People from all walks of life protested, showing how much they loved their own language.

So, on February 21, 1952, there was a big protest across Bangladesh. The government had ordered that nobody could gather, but brave students and regular people still came together. They marched from Dhaka University. When they reached a place called Shaheed Minar, the police tried to stop them. But they kept going. Sadly, the police started shooting, and many young people, like Rafiq, Shafiq, Salam, Barkat, and Jabbar, lost their lives.

Because of this sacrifice, the ruling class had to listen. They recognized Bangla as an important language. This event is why we remember February 21st.

International Mother Language Day helps us remember not just our language, but also languages from all around the world. It makes countries work together better. Now, 188 countries celebrate February 21st as this special day. On this day, our national flag is lowered halfway. People wear black badges, walk to Shaheed Minar without shoes, and lay flowers there. Groups arrange performances, and the radio and TV show special things.

We're thankful to the United Nations for making February 21st special. Because of this day, the world knows about our heroes and our nation. We stand proudly among all the countries of the world.
