Composition Floods of Bangladesh

Flood is a type of natural disaster that causes a lot of harm to people's lives and their belongings. In Bangladesh, it happens every year.

There are many reasons for floods. One of the main causes is heavy rainfall. The rivers and canals can't carry all the rainwater quickly to the sea. As a result, the water level in the rivers and canals rises rapidly, overflowing their banks and causing floods. Also, our rivers are losing their ability to carry water properly, making the low-lying areas of the country easily get flooded. Sometimes, tidal bores also cause floods.

Although floods happen almost every year in our country, the floods of 1998 and 2004 affected almost the entire country. They were worse than any previous floods and caused a lot of damage and suffering.

The losses caused by floods are beyond description. Houses, crops, and cattle get washed away. Trees are uprooted. People lose their homes and food, and they have to seek shelter on high roads and buildings. They have to go without food for days. Diseases like cholera, typhoid, and dysentery spread quickly in the flooded areas. There is a shortage of food, clothes, and clean drinking water everywhere.

Even though we can't completely stop floods, we can reduce the damage by taking some preventive measures. We need to deepen our rivers and build proper embankments. We should also have a well-planned irrigation system. It's essential to have both short-term and long-term plans to implement these measures.

Despite causing significant losses, floods do have some positive effects. They make the land fertile by carrying silt and also help in washing away filth and dirt.
