Dowry and Women's Position in Bangladesh

Dowry, which reflects women's status in Bangladesh, is a significant social problem. Many people suffer because of this system, as seen in the news. Hundreds of innocent brides have lost their lives, and thousands of families have been affected. Children have been left without parents due to this cursed practice, turning marriage into a commercial exchange. We must raise awareness to eliminate this evil.

Nowadays, bridegrooms are treated like commodities in the market. Greedy hands of the groom and his parents seek easy income from the bride's helpless parents. This crime is driven by their insatiable greed. Dowry is worse than bribery, leaving fathers with daughters in a helpless state. Laws have been put in place to stop dowry, but they have not been fully effective, as intentions cannot be easily changed.

This practice has its roots in the Hindu tradition of inheritance, where daughters did not get a share of their father's wealth. To compensate for this, they were given a large sum of money and assets at the time of marriage, which became known as dowry. However, this practice led to husbands bargaining over their wives' shares, leading to the present-day dowry problem.

This issue has also influenced the Muslim society in Bangladesh. Demanding dowry from a prospective husband is as terrible as depriving a daughter of her inheritance. Thankfully, the situation is gradually changing, and the government is taking measures to eradicate this system and improve women's position. However, it is not enough. Proper education and individual development can be key to solving this social problem. We should remember that many of us have daughters and sisters in our families.
