Internet is the freshest marvel of science in the revolution of information and communication technology. It has brought a radical change in the IT sector. The term 'internet' is the short form of International Network. It can gather and transmit messages, information, and pictures swiftly from one corner of the world to another. Network after network connecting has created a vast and dimensional network worldwide. Internet has a symbolic name, WWW, which stands for World Wide Web. It is properly attributed for its global communication activities.

Internet is a contemporary and recent communication device. In 1960, the defense service of Pentagon in the USA first utilized it. The computer experts of the defense service established a system of internal relations among four different computers, known as Darpanet. In 1984, the National Science Foundation of the USA introduced another similar system for the general public, called Nesfonet. From there, the improvement of the internet progressed like a fairy tale. In 1993, it became open for commercial use. Within a short time, millions of people were connected to the internet. Currently, more than twenty thousand networks are linked to the international network, and its user base is rapidly expanding in every corner of the world.

Internet is usually accessed through online and offline methods. Users can directly connect their computers to any service provider via telephone, which is the online method. Alternatively, a user can access the internet using a nearby server as a medium, known as offline internet or E-mail.

Internet serves various purposes. Its primary function is to transmit and receive messages rapidly. Through e-mail, messages can be sent in a matter of seconds. E-mail is the most cost-effective mode of communication, saving time and expenses, even surpassing Fax in terms of affordability.

Sitting at home, we can access any library in London. Necessary books can be opened through the internet, and we can even print certain pages from a book using our computer. People from any country can easily read newspapers and magazines on their computers. Job seekers can apply to different institutions through the internet, sending their resumes with ease based on advertisements. We can communicate with foreign doctors and receive essential advice. We can meet friends and relatives and propose marriage using a computer network. Internet connections enable successful trade and commerce, traffic signal control, shopping, office management, and entertainment. Additionally, internet access aids in the diagnosis of diseases and many other day-to-day affairs.

Bangladesh began using the internet in 1993. Information services network initiated internet service in Dhaka for the first time. Grameen Cybernet followed, aiming to bring IT to the grassroots level. The Bangladesh T and T Board permitted five institutions to set up VSATS. Initially, internet service was primarily limited to E-mail, but on-line connection was introduced on 15 June 1996. In 2002, a total of sixty thousand internet connections were provided to the country.

Internet is like Aladin's magic lamp, with its countless multi-purposed uses. Its advantages are undeniable. However, we cannot ignore its demerits as well. The coarseness and indecency found in the forbidden world of the internet have been leading our young generation towards moral decadence. Blackmailing, virus infections, and information theft cause significant harm to computer users.
