Composition | Smoking in Public Places
Smoking should not be allowed in places where the public gathers, like restaurants and parks. It should only be allowed in people's homes. Smoking is not only annoying for people who don't smoke, but it also has many serious problems. Experts say that for every seven smokers who die from smoking, at least one non-smoker dies from breathing in cigarette smoke. Smoking in public should be banned because it harms the environment and the economy, puts others at risk of health problems, and has a negative impact on children.
Cigarettes have a big impact on the environment. Smoking pollutes the air and creates a lot of litter. People who smoke often throw their cigarette butts anywhere, like out of car windows or in someone's yard. It's a common sight to see people throwing their butts out of car windows when driving around. Cigarette butts take a long time to break down, from 18 months to 10 years. So, this litter keeps piling up over time. Not only are the cigarette butts unsightly, but they also harm our lives.
Smoking in public also has economic problems. In our country, we spend a lot of money on healthcare to treat preventable illnesses caused by smoking. Smoking can also create financial burdens for families. Cigarettes are expensive, and in some families, buying them is a top priority. Sometimes people are more concerned about buying cigarettes than buying food, which doesn't seem right. Most smokers live below the poverty line, so they don't need the added expense of buying cigarettes, which are not cheap at all.
Despite some positive effects, there are many negative effects of smoking. Smoking is proven to be very dangerous for health. Each cigarette contains more than 4000 harmful chemicals, which can lead to serious diseases like heart attacks, asthma, bronchitis, and lung cancer. In Britain alone, around 3,500 people die in road accidents each year, but 120,000 people die from smoking-related causes.
While most smokers are aware of some health risks associated with smoking, they may not realize how serious those risks can be. Smoking has such a strong impact on the lungs that 85% of lung cancer cases could be prevented if people stopped smoking. Although smokers may know they are harming themselves, they may not be aware of the negative effects on the people around them. Many smokers argue that restricting smoking in public takes away their freedom, but in reality, smoking in public takes away non-smokers' right to breathe fresh air. Breathing in secondhand smoke, also known as passive smoking, has harmful health effects on those exposed to it. Studies show that secondhand smoke causes premature deaths in non-smokers due to lung cancer and heart disease.
The most serious problem with smoking in public is its negative impact on children. Children are the future, and instead of polluting their bodies, we should be doing everything we can to keep them healthy. Smoking can start affecting children even before they are born. If a mother is exposed to secondhand smoke, there is an increased risk of birth defects. There is growing evidence that shows that children exposed to environmental tobacco smoke have impaired lung function. This is especially true for children with asthma. Secondhand smoke triggers asthma attacks and worsens symptoms. So, smoking around children is harmful to their health now and could lead to even more problems if they start smoking themselves in the future.
Smoking should be completely banned in all public places. It negatively affects our society through environmental problems, economic issues, health risks to others, and especially the health problems it causes in children. There is no good reason to smoke cigarettes, and it doesn't benefit anyone in any way. Smoking in public is like driving drunk because both endanger the lives of innocent people who choose not to engage in such reckless behavior. The only difference is that the effects of smoking are not immediately visible because they happen over the long term. Banning smoking in public will ultimately improve our quality of life and make society as a whole better.
